What will I be doing in this unit?
You have to produce a portfolio of work into lighting and sound systems as used in performances (theatre, concerts, etc). Your portfolio will contain three main tasks:
- Design of a lighting system
- Design of a sound system
- Evaluation of the light and sound at a performance you attend
Top tips for writing your portfolio
The most important things to remember throughout writing the portfolio are:
- Every piece of science must be related to an application in light or sound
- Every aspect of your light/sound system design must be related to science
- You must do your own practical work – to a high standard, producing reliable and accurate data and evaluating both your own work and its application to light and sound
- Don’t waffle! More is not better – your writing should be focused and to the point. An extra 50 pages of science that doesn’t have anything to do with your designs will not get you any credit.
Writing up practicals
Use as many of these headings as possible in each write-up. You won’t be able to use them all every time:
- Aim / Prediction / Intro
- Equipment (include a photo or a diagram)
- Method – don’t waffle!
- Findings (table, graph, calculations as required)
- Conclusion – what do your findings mean?
- Evaluation – how good are your findings or how could you improve the experiment?
- Application – what does this have to do with Unit 10?
